Common questions

Is it toxic?
No. Our finishes are 100% non-toxic and safe for everyday use.

Is it food safe?
Yes. They’re specifically formulated for wooden items that come into contact with food, such as bowls, spoons, and cutting boards.

Can I use it on cutting boards and utensils, or just bowls?
Absolutely. The finishes work on all wooden kitchenware and furniture, not just bowls.

How often should I reapply the finish?
For items used regularly with food, reapply as needed—If the wood looks dry add some more.

How do I apply it properly?
Apply a thin coat with a soft cloth, paper towel, or fingers (to soften the skin) let it soak in, and then rub off the excess. For wax, simply rub it in and buff with a paper towel to a sheen.

How long does it take to dry/cure?
The oil finish will soak into the wood and be ready for light use within a few hours, though full curing may take 24 hours in temperatures above 70 degrees. The wax finish will set almost immediately after buffing.

Will it change the color of the wood?
It enhances the natural color and grain, giving the wood a richer, warmer tone, but it won’t add artificial stains or dyes.

Can I use it over other finishes?
It works best on bare or previously oiled wood. It won’t adhere properly to sealed, varnished, or polyurethane-coated surfaces.

Will it leave the surface glossy or matte?
The oil gives a soft, natural luster. The wax provides a slightly higher sheen after buffing. When using penetrating oils and wanting a shine you will need to sand to at least 400 grit.

Does it protect against water and stains?
Yes, it creates a natural barrier against moisture and food stains, but it’s not waterproof. Wooden items should never be soaked or left in standing water.

How much product should I use at a time?
A little goes a long way—use a thin, even coat. Applying more won’t improve protection and may leave a sticky surface.

How do I remove the stickiness that was left by the oil? Simply apply more oil. Since oils are acidic, they will eat through the stickiness. Make sure to wipe off all excess.

How should I store the oil/wax?
Keep containers tightly sealed, out of direct sunlight, and at room temperature. In a refrigerator it will last indefinitely.

What’s the shelf life?
Typically 2–3 years when stored properly. If the oil thickens or smells off, it’s time to replace it.

Is the finish heat resistant?
It holds up well to warm foods under 170 degrees but avoid direct heat sources like ovens or stovetops.

Can I use it on unfinished wood only, or also on already finished wood?
It’s best on unfinished or previously oiled wood. It won’t penetrate through sealed finishes.

Will it go rancid over time?
No. Unlike some natural oils, these finishes are formulated not to go rancid.

Is it safe for kids’ toys and baby items?
Yes, the finishes are completely safe for wooden toys, baby spoons, and similar items.

Does it contain any nut oils or allergens?
No, the proteins that would cause an allergic reaction have been removed—safe for those with common nut allergies.

Can it be used outdoors?
Yes, it is great for outdoor furniture or other wooden items that are exposed to the elements.
